Rock Island, Ill. – When arctic guides are choosing overshoes, they look for durability, versatility, light weight, and most importantly waterproof materials. NEOS Trekkers™ have that essential combination, according to guide Keith Heger, and that’s why he chose Trekkers™ for an upcoming 340-mile expedition across Greenland.
“I have 100 percent confidence that these overshoes will work very well for us,” he said in a recent interview. “Weighing just a little over a pound each, they offer light-weight, knee-high protection in any terrain–snow, ice, water or mud.”
Based in Wilmette, Ill., Heger is affiliated with Polar Explorers, a guided tour company that has specialized in arctic travel for 25 years. He has made hundreds of trips in extreme conditions, but is still very excited about his first trip across Greenland, scheduled for May 15 through June 7. He and another guide will accompany six “team members” and two “mushers” with dog teams on the challenging ski trip.
“We will ski about 15 miles per day–for about 10 hours,” Heger said, “but when our skis come off, we have to have protective footwear that keeps us warm, dry and comfortable.” He explained that getting wet feet during a trip can lead to dangerous hypothermia or “trench foot” in which the tissue breaks down, making travel, walking and skiing very difficult. “Trekkers™ will help us to thrive, not just survive,” he added.
He likes the looks of the knee-high Trekkers™ and compliments the Velcro closures that allow easy maneuvering with gloved hands. The overshoes are comfort rated to zero degrees and are 100 percent waterproof, meaning they are ideal for arctic trips.
“The Trekkers™ will go over what we call our “camp booties,” which consist of special socks, a vapor barrier and an insulated boot,” said Heger. “Snow is more abrasive than people realize, so the durable sole on Trekkers™ makes us stable, and really holds up well during a long trip like this.”
The guide, who has a degree in marine biology from the University of Oregon, says his travelers like a challenge, and actually expect hardships, but they count on him to wisely select equipment and gear. Each day starts and ends with three hours of chores and a meal, while wearing the Trekkers™. After a day in 20-degree temperatures and wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour, bedtime is spent in special tents and sleeping bags, and the Trekkers™ come off.
