NEOS to Sponsor Musher Team from Nevahome Kennels

Rock Island, Ill. – When it comes to pure athletic challenge, sled dog racing ranks very highly, pitting man and dog against a harsh environment of ice, snow, wind and frigid temperatures. NEOS overshoes will be part of this popular endurance sport as they become sponsors for the seven-member “musher” team from Nevahome Kennels in Jefferson, New Hampshire.

The Nevahome team will compete in several sled dog competitions in Maine, Michigan and Minnesota in the winter of 2008-2009. These contests attract thousands of dedicated fans to the start and finish of the multiple-day races. However, the team’s major challenge will be competing in the world-famous Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in Alaska in 2010. That grueling 1,161-mile race requires serious conditioning and equipment.

“We have chosen NEOS because of its proven reputation for comfort, reliability and weather-proof materials,” said Nevahome co-owner Mitch Ingerson. They have selected the Navigator 5™ with the unique “STABILicers®” outsole, which he heard about from friends in Alaska and from his fellow competitors.

As part of the sponsorship, NEOS is contributing financial support as well as overshoes for the entire racing team.

Serious sled dog mushers are always searching for the best equipment to enhance their performance. So it was not surprising to discover that the top three mushers in the recent 2008 Can-Am Crown International 250 Sled Dog Race in Fort Kent, Maine, were all wearing NEOS overboots during the race.
Another veteran dog-sled racer from the Nevahome team–Matt Carstens from Whitefield, N.H.– considers the 250-mile Can-Am to be among the toughest races in the sport for the musher and his canine athletes.

According to Carstens, the relatively light weight of the NEOS overboot reduces the amount of physical exertion on the mushers who repeatedly kick off from the runners or run behind the sled. The spiked STABILicers® soles of the NEOS overshoe offer beneficial traction to assist the dogs in propelling their way through the forest wilderness and up the endless hills of the rugged Allagash back country.

Carstens also wore NEOS overboots in the 400-mile John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon and the Upper Pensinsula 200-Sled Dog Race earlier this year, where he finished third and sixth respectively.

The Nevahome Kennels currently house 74 Husky dogs, with another dozen “on the way,” according to Mitch Ingerson. He and his wife, Kricket, have been involved with Husky races for almost a decade. They are excited about the NEOS sponsorship and look forward to the day when there may be NEOS boots for the dogs, too!”
